Good news! The PS3 just might hit a mainstream price range eventually, in the form of Mr. Slimline.

PS3 put on a diet

Sony’s working on smaller chips for PS3, pointing the way to a sleeker, slimmer console before too long.

It hasn’t even launched in Europe yet, but Sony’s already working on the next generation of PlayStation 3.

The games giant reckons it can cut the size of its console’s innards, paving the way for a redesign on the outside.

In a statement from its Japanese press office, Sony said it expected the transition to 45-nm chips would happen in 2008, or early 2009. That change will halve the size of current 90-nm chips and could mean a slimline PS3 is in the works already.

It’s still a way off, but Sony wouldn’t surprise anyone with a smaller console. After all, the PS2 underwent drastic shrinkage once smaller chips were available, and the PS3’s bulky frame could certainly stand to lose a pound or two.

Got burned by Sony and will no longer buy any of their PlayStation products.

If it drops to $400, which is a lot but I have my finger's crossed, I will actually consider picking this up.

Price drop is good. But still no great system selling games yet.
Although if Sony made an update that can play import ps1/2 games, that would definitely convince me to buy one. Having only ps3 games region free was dumb.

I don't think because the manufacturing costs go down, that the retail price would go down. If they keep the prices the same, it'll take some of the bite out of their production costs.
