What I Look For In Games

What do you look for in a video game? What's most important to you? The graphics? The characters? Here you can speak your mind.

Personally, I look for a good storyline. The reason I'm turned off by a large number of games nowadays is because thier story has been done already. That's why I feel I like some games that some critics say sucks: because I don't look at the graphics or anything like that, I focus on the story. And maybe that's why some games critics say are good, beacuse of the opposite reason.

If there is a different twist on an old plot, than I ususally like it. If there's a new concept to the story, I usually like it. And that's why games based on movies don't really appeal to me I guess; it doesn't have that same feeling as an actual game story. However, if it's one of those "game sequals" to a movie, it appeals to me better.

I guess all that's expected of a writer.

I think this topic has been done before, and recently, too, under a different name.

Personally, there is no one thing I look for in a game. If a game is supposed to be known for its graphics, and is well done, I'll play it. If a game is known for its humor (read:Psychonauts), then I'll like that, too. If a game is known for its story, and it's well done (read:Indigo Prophesy), then that is good too. I'm not especially picky. If a game is fun and well-done, I'll enjoy it.

A good story is essential for a game, but if there's a certain fun factor involved that keeps me coming back for more, then that's good enough for a nut like me.

Xenosaga had a great story, but there wasn't a lot of playability--too many cutscenes. I enjoyed them, but I wasn't interested in playing a cinematic movie. I wanted a game! Thankfully, 2 and 3 improved upon that.

The only non-story games I REALLY enjoy are puzzles like Tetris, Columns and Dr.Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (one of my favorite puzzle games)

FTW! (How many times have I said that?)

Oh, that reminds me. I need to download it for my VC.

When it comes to RPGs, I look at story and replay value.

When it comes to action/shooters, I look at the violence factor, whether there is a unique concept, and shock value.

When it comes to games dealing with cars, I like realism.

I really don't know what I look for. I like to have characters I like, and Rogue Galaxy has taught me that there IS such a thing as a story being far too cliched.

Since playing the Black Isle/Bioware games, I tend to gravitate towards RPGs that give you more options, more ways of playing the game. I like having options.

In the end, though, sheer gameplay is the most important thing. Sadly, it's also the most nebulous area. I like Dragon Quest VIII's old school approach, the Tales series real-time fighting, and the aforementioned American RPG depth and strategy.

Mostly I just want something to differentiate the game. Something a little different. I like how Shin Megami Tensei takes place in a completely different setting from most games. I like how Baldur's Gate, despite being in a somewhat generic setting, manages to have great characters and a wry sense of humor. Fallout also gets points for a unique setting. Suikoden I like for the large cast and varied gameplay styles.

Oh, I'm also a fan of the carrot approach, as I play Diablo, which is the epitome of the carrot game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: your setting restricts your story. That's why SMT: Nocturne and Fallout have such original stories.

character and gameplay. thats about all i look for.

a game can still be fun without a story. however, when a good story is part of the whole, then its just that much better.

                      Replay Value and Customization.

Go Steambot Chronicles! I've played that game 6-7 times now. Most I've ever done with any adventure game.

I like a game that doesn't make me constantly feel like I'm wasting my time. Both Killer7 and Xenosaga have made me feel this way, as well as many other RPGs.

I like a game that gives me a substantial reward for doing the same thing over and over.

You know, maybe I just hate videogames.

Elebits is a fun and addictive game with a lot of replay value....in my opinion anyway. It's that kind of "cash-back" incentive I look for when I buy games. I want to be able to get my money's worth and not feel like I'm throwing money away.

I almost made that mistake with Wiiplay. Least I realized how disappointing it was just moments after I bought it.
