how do i make characters go away after battles?

Is it an event battle? If so, just put a "Control> Remove Character" code after the battle. Although it might look tacky to have a character disappear, it's the only way to make it work. I'm not sure if you need to "Refresh Display": if the character doesn't seem to leave after the remove character code, put in a refresh display.

No need for Refresh Display--just use a Display Off command and target whatever you want to make disappear.

There's also a way to do this with non-event battles using Obright's treasure trick, but it's a bit more complicated. Say so if that's what you were trying for.
