    Do you have a hero?

I have very few men that I truly admire for all that they do, but there are men who I look up to with the utmost respect. Khalil Gibran is one of those men, he spoke from his soul the truths he saw in the world, and of the falsities. The amount of quotes this man has that truly make you sit back and ponder all of existence is mind boggling. Examples. Gibran inspired the quote from John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." from this line in his earlier works The New Frontier: "Are you a politician asking what your country can do for you or a zealous one asking what you can do for your country? If you are the first, then you are a parasite; if the second, then you are an oasis in a desert." I read Gibran's work and it makes me realize so much about the world.

I have one other hero, and I feel silly for him being my hero. This person is often who I model a lot of my life around. I grew up very shunned in most of the small towns I lived in thanks to my radical view points in comparison to everyone else my age, and even much older than me. So I didn't discuss my beliefs with them, I merely acted goofy and tried to become their friends. People befriend those they feel at ease around. Many people tell me they feel at ease around me, but when they find out my true ideals of not believing in a God and how I accept lots of things they don't, almost always their views of me are altered. I understand as they were raised this way, but it's defeating to the soul at times. Now after this huge wall of text, I'll tell you who my hero is.....

    Vash The Stampede

I know, I'm a loser, but I love how he lives his life. Fun loving and accepting of everyone, but a leader and a brave man when he needs to be. I honestly do model parts of my life off of him.

So, who are your heroes? I may update this later with other men I look up to who are not famous, but I'd like to see if you guys even take an interest in the topic for starters.

      Any particular reason why?

EDIT - I hate to be a Mora about this, but I think this is one of those topics that require an explanation.

James K. Polk. He went in to the presidency, set an agenda, did it, didn't seek re-election. No brag or bluster, just work, which god knows is what we need today.

Way out west there was this fella I wanna tell ya about. Goes by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. See, this Lebowski, he called himself "The Dude". Now, "Dude" - there's a name no man would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense. And a lot about where he lived, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place so darned interestin'. See, they call Los Angeles the "City Of Angels"; but I didn't find it to be that, exactly. But I'll allow it as there are some nice folks there. 'Course I ain't never been to London, and I ain't never seen France. And I ain't never seen no queen in her damned undies, so the feller says. But I'll tell you what - after seeing Los Angeles, and this here story I'm about to unfold, well, I guess I seen somethin' every bit as stupefyin' as you'd seen in any of them other places. And in English, too. So I can die with a smile on my face, without feelin' like the good Lord gypped me. Now this here story I'm about to unfold took place in the early '90s - just about the time of our conflict with Sad'm and the I-raqis. I only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? Sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here - the Dude from Los Angeles. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude. The Dude, from Los Angeles. And even if he's a lazy man - and the Dude was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in all of Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide. Sometimes there's a man, sometimes, there's a man. Well, I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I've done introduced it enough.
My kind of life’s no better off

Sally Ride. She was the first woman astronaut to go to space. I admire her greatly because she broke a lot of barriers and opened numerous opportunities for women to pursue that awesome dream of going into space--perhaps the moon if NASA should get into it again.

Speaking in a broader sense, I admire people who never give up on their dreams. The dreams they have lead to great change in our society, and the world is better because of it. If we don't have dreams, we have nothing.

Re: Do you have a hero?

Well, as an introduction to my first acting class, I had to come up with three heroes.

The first was Serge. You know the one. Genuinely confident, charming and funny. Not at all overbearing or obnoxious... Well, tolerable, in any event. I couldn't say a whole lot about his exploits in class, but I did relay something he told me: "You have to stop treating women like 'women' and start treating them like people." I've never really had to put it in practice, but at the time it struck me as very poignant, and I keep it in mind. Still, I guess that's kind of insubstantial heroism.

Second, a friend of mine who now attends Northwestern University. She's four months younger than me, but about ten years older in the head, and mature to a fault. She's like my Boss, or my Mia Fey, or rather, I should say, I'm the Batou to her Major. Despite these comparisons, I've respected her for her relentless compassion and acute appreciation of the world around her. I feel like I wouldn't have tried a lot things if it weren't for her encouragment. This past year, though, she got bigheaded. Hugeheaded. She's still my friend, but she's no longer my hero.

Third was Magus. I guess that's still true.

I'll sound really stupid if I say it, but eh... my bigger brother.

he saved my life, once, from a house fire (saved our entire family, and home, more-so).
