    Is this normal? (Wii related)

I have my Wii on WiiConnect24 which updates the system even when it's not turned on. But lately, I've been concerned with the console overheating since I've got it plugged in throughout the day. And I need it plugged in so the WiiConnect24 can work.

Yesterday, I paid a visit to Gamestop and happened to notice some thingamajigs that attach to the back of game consoles and act like a fan to cool the internal unit. I'm thinking about getting one, but is it really necessary? If a Wii gets unusually warm even when it's plugged in and I'm not using it, there's no cause for concern, right?

I suppose I could just deactivate the WiiConnect24 and unplug the Wii from time to time, but it's too much of a hassle and besides, the WiiConnect24 is a pretty cool thing.

    I don't know--it's just a worry I have.

I don't know if the Wii ones have any problems but the Xbox 360 Intercooler fan was recalled because they were frying 360s.

One representative even reported that the Intercooler has caused "scorch marks" on the console.

For those who simply must have a cooling accessory, one Microsoft representative suggested the Pelican Fan Stand, whose power comes from a USB input.
I think it's probably nothing to worry about. Nintendo wouldn't ask people to leave their console connected 24/7 without extensively testing overheating issues but then nobody's perfect. So if you do get a fan add-on make sure it's USB powered and NOT a Nyko brand.

If you have your Wii in a place that's confined or surrounded by other electronics, you might want to consider moving some things around.
Is it by itself or what?

The Wii gets hot when it's online. if you turn WiiConnect24 off, or play a gamecube game (it turns all Wii functions off), you'll notice it cools down right away.

same thing happens with the PSP. you have it online for a bit, and the left side heats up.

It's not a problem, but try to have it in a place where that heat can escape away from the Wii. The Wii will still be warm to the touch, but it won't damage the system. I'm sure they tested these things staying online for months before they released them. if there had been any problems, they would have fixed them before release.

just wait till it burns down your house so you can sue nintendo.

your wii should be fine, cooling system are just extra crap people buy when their scared of something happening. if a wii sucked that much where it would spontaniously combust then i doubt it would of made it to the market.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!
Card Three is released! You can find it here!

If I recall exactly, this is actually a characteristic of the type of cooling system the Wii uses. In order to keep the unit as quiet as possible whilst preventing heat from damaging the internal components, the chassis heats up a bit. But it usually only happens when there's a lot going on inside.

It's kind of like Apple's laptops, come to think of it. When there's a lot of load, the chassis feels a bit hot. But not scorching.

It's a common problem. When I play with my Wii for too long it starts to burn.... Oh, you're talking about the console. Never mind.

If you're still thinking about getting a Wii cooler you might want to wait for this. I'm thinking of getting it just to have a pretty glowy stand.

Hey, that looks pretty cool! (pardon the pun ) I wouldn't mind investing in something like that.
