Is this normal for PO Boxes?

As it's pretty well implied by the title, I have a PO Box in town.
It's rather nice because it's a real pain having to fill out endless change of address papers because of how often I had been moving.

But...it's a little strange. When I go check and see if I have something in there, sure enough there's mail. A lot of mail actually.

The thing is, most of it isn't mine. It's like I'm getting everyone else's mail except my own.

I've gotten credit card offers for about 4 different people, legal threats, many medical bills, ice skating magazines, sweepstakes offers, a merry christmas letter addressed to a business from a credit union in town, and so on.
I've taken a lot of the stuff to the front desk saying it's not mine and this person doesn't have the box anymore (I do), but it just doesn't get through apparently.

I was told before that for security reasons that only the person currently registered to a PO Box can receive mail there. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

So if you guys ever feel like sending me wads of money by mail (I suggest using delivery confirmation!) you may address me as Tina.

    Or Jane.

    Or Henry Smith.

    Or PO Box holder.

Or Valued Customer. (Stop sending me your crap wal-mart!!)

    Or Matt McArdle.

Because apparently to the United States Postal Service, I am anyone I want to be.

But really, does this happen to anyone else?

These are all addressed to your P.O. box I take it. I wouldn't be surprised if some of it is typos, some of it is random junk mail, and most of it is meant for previous box renters. It wouldn't surprise me if several people shared that box before you rented it.

Your post office most likely has a box for wrong or unknown P.O. box mail. Whenever my dad gets mail that's not for him he just puts it in there.

I've received other people's bills in my P.O. box at my college; several bills are for the same person. Apparently, there's another person locally with my first and last name who hasn't been paying their medical bills. I've even gotten harassing calls from collection agencies who are looking to contact this person.

I also get collection agency calls for other people-- I guess my apartment address and telephone number are popular choices when deadbeats are listing fake contact information.
In the beginning the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and is widely considered as a bad move.

I have a P.O. box also, and yes its a common thing, mine is 264, and after talking to the post master we found out that most mail were for the people in the 294(flipped the 6 over) and 254(fifty and sixty sounding alike), so that solved some problems

But yeah I get a lot of spam mail, partly because its easier for businesses to send spam mail to PO Box customers rather then a bunch of residential houses that may have no tenants

Here I come Pav, like the Kool-Aid man barging into a funeral! Oh yeah!

The lesson: Stick to your own house's mailbox.

Why are you getting Blaze's mail?

Get the fatest marker you can find and write "VIVA LA ANGEL DUST" on any piece of returnable mail (bills, jury duty notices).

They won't mess with you again.

tjoris, many of these are for the previous box holders, but only I'm supposed to be getting mail there. I know the reason why behind their apparently strict rule for that, but it's not followed at all.

Oh, and I'm not getting Blazes mail.

                    I think...

But if I am, I'm probably getting yours too.

If you get any of mine, and its from a debt collector, do a favor and use that fat marker and write "Deceased" on it and send it back
