    Def Jam Icon

Just downloaded the demo for 360 and have been playing it for a few.

Never played Vendetta, but I loved Fight for New York. But Icon's game play is DRASTICALLY different which may make some fans either love it or hate it. Main reason being that Aki, the previous developer of the games, wasn't involved with Icon. EA decided to make it themselves.

Soon as I started up the demo, the first thing I noticed is how god awful slow it goes. FFNY was a lot quicker with punches, kicks, running, ect. You can't seem to run either, instead your character sorta dashes or rolls slowly when tapping a direction twice. Because of the change in speed, the controls feel really sluggish. But after a while, I found myself not noticing it as much.

Blocking feels odd at first. You hold the right trigger to enable blocking (no actual blocking occurs yet), but while holding it, you need to press the right analog stick in a direction depending if you wanna block high or low. I'm too used to just using the D-pad or the left analog stick to block high/low.

Using the environment to hurt your opponent is pretty interesting. Although things react different depending on the song, all you really need to do is get your opponent in the spot you want to use, and use the turntable move by holding the left trigger, and basically spamming 360 degree movements with the right analog stick. It's easy to do. Almost makes the stage seem like a music video (even the clouds move to the beat of the music).

The actual fighting moves for the rappers in the demo (Big Boi, and T.I.) seem to favor a more realistic style this time. Besides a few spin kicks in videos, it doesn't look like there's gonna be kung fu fighting masters, but more of an actual street fight feel. Not the wrestling style from the previous games.

Graphics look great! Although the realistic look goes away once the stage reacts to the music. The gas station has nicely detailed buildings in the background, but depending on the music, they hop up and back down like a cartoon. Then there's the obvious bloody faces as you get beaten, and even your clothing gets dirty as the fight goes on. After a while the characters get fatigued and their stances reflect it. I haven't noticed if this affects the actual fighting though, but this is a demo so who knows for the final version.

Overall, it's a much different Def Jam. Although it had some initial flaws to me, I ended up liking the demo. Definitely gonna buy it.
