Oh my god, they finally blew it up.

No its nothing major or world altering. But Last weekend our power went out or something, and now my computer will not detect any of my hard drives! YAH! It was asking me for a boot disk, got me one, and now nothing.

So any suggestions. It keeps attempting to detect IDE drives, and never goes any further. I'm at my wits end. Should I just buy a new computer or try to salvage this one?

I wish I could help, similar thing happened to my laptop. BTW, what are people supposed to do with dead computers? Just throw them out?

yes, just throw them out ...over freeway overpasses and onto incoming traffic.

Generally you're supposed to have them recycled and there's a charge involved. Same goes for monitors and most high end electronics equipment. I believe it's because the silicon can pollute ground water. Do a search on computer recycling locally and maybe you can find a place that'll take it off your hands and waive the fee, or maybe they can use portions of it for educational purposes. Wipe your hard drive. There are a lot of places here in the bay; availability varies, I imagine.

So by any of my hard drives you mean ones that were on when the power went out? Have you tried a hard drive that couldn't have been fried?

Well if you're lucky it just fried the IDE interface card on the motherboard and you need a new motherboard. If you're not so lucky, it fried all of your hard drives and you'll have to get some more of those, and all of your data is likely gone.

Not sure if you tried this yet or not but I would suggest trying to install an OS (Windows or a Unix variant).

Also I would invest in a surge protector. They usually only run like $20-$40 and are well worth it for things like this. A UPS would be better but those can get pretty expensive.

Yah I keep saying hard driveS, but I only have one, its partitioned in to 4. I'm gonna mess around with the cables some, see if that helps and if I'm lucky, I might be able to borrow a hard drive to see if thats the problem.

I just took my old comp to the backyard and left it there.

one time, I moved my desktop and the next time I booted it, it was like "u got no hard drivelol" but then I opened it and reseated the cables and all was dandy.
