You sure about the 800 for the UK? 800 British Pounds is over $1500, and even if we're just talking the equivalent of $800 US, that's really high, especially since IIRC average disposable income tends to be lower in the UK than the US.

currency conversion aside, I think it's pretty damn stupid for Sony to increase the price of the system. I don't think that has ever been done before. you launch it at a certain price, you KEEP it at that price, or bring it down. you don't raise it.

I don't know whether USD have been fluctuating against Canadian Dollars recently, but it seems they made a mistake and they're correcting it (or just figured they'd be able to hike the price a bit).

Well, what do you think will happen to sales and loyalty as a result?

(One possible consequence could be that people might try and anticipate these adjustments-for-currency on the next console launch?)

Sony says it's not their fault.

"Although the suggested retail price (SRP) of the PlayStation 3 in Canada has not changed, some Canadian retailers have chosen to increase their retail price as a result of the weaker Canadian dollar. This increase is solely at the discretion of the retailer, as Sony Computer Entertainment Canada has not issued a price increase."--An SCEC representative.

The PS3 price in Austraila has been announced. $999.95 AUD which converts to about $773 US. They're apparently used to getting reamed on game prices though. Most 360 games have been going for $120AUD (according to Kotaku) which is more than $90 US!
