View Full Version : World of Warcraft
So I picked up WoW because a friend of mine threatened me to
do so. I ended up quitting FFXI a while back because I just couldn't
find the time to log on and actually make decent progress.
I'm a 28 Undead Rogue and it's been fun as hell so far. The game
definitely does its best to cater to everyone. If you don't like
grinding for experience, start questing. The jobs are fairly easy
to gain skill in, and soloeing with any class is possible, but how
efficient you are really depends on your build. <-- You aquire
'talent points' each level up after 10 that can be put into
different skill trees (very similar to Diablo II) so there's a
lot of customization. What I love(and want to have sex with)
is the ability to reset your talent points if you feel like you've
screwed up your build, or just want to try something else.
This costs you some shillings each time, of course.
It's the tits, seriously.
Blizzard still needs to fix up some things, though. A ****load of
unbalance going on with certain classes. Same goes for the high
population servers, as sometimes the lag will be so terrible the
game becomes unplayable. This seems to only happen during
peak hours. Hoping to bleeding Jesus that they take care of it.
An honor system for PvP will be implemented soon, too.
That and 'Battlegrounds', which you can read about on the official page.
Any pavilion0rz currently playing?
I'm really glad the Pavilion community is still intact. Seems so, anyway.

What server are you playing on, Thief?
If any of you decide to switch to a PvP server, come to Skullcrusher.
I only played Druid up to lvl 11, Alex. The animal forms are cool, especially
if you're Tauren. Why are you all playing as alliance SCUM?!

I'm on Bonechewer, level 31 or 32 Undead Rogue. I haven't played in so long though. I should prolly start up again.
I don't like PvP much, either. I think it'll be great once the honor
system comes into play and the classes are properly balanced.
Right now, it's just annoying. Getting ganked and corpse camped
by a bunch of paladins is no fun. The only reason I'm on the server
is because my buddy plays there. He's a shaman, though, so he has
nothing to complain about. I'd much rather be playing Warrior, but
they're terrible in PvP right now, so I'm stuck with Rogue.
I've been wanting to make a gnome/warrior, though.
So maybe I'll start one on Cenarius.

Draygone

I'd be addicted if not for a bit of computer trouble (which I haven't tried to solve any). The animal forms are cool, especially if you're Tauren. Why are you all playing as alliance SCUM?!'Cause I figured that becoming an animal would've been pointless if I already was one. Or do Tauren turn into different (and cooler) animals than Night Elves?
It's personal taste, really. I know the Tauren's bear form has horns,
where the night elves get long ears.

i play on doomhammer with the GWBCQ crew. and i dont think its nearly as addicting as FFXI was for me. i can easily set this game down for days without playing it and comeback with no problem or feeling like i missed out. specially since they reward you with 200% xp for actually not playing at all.
also its nice to be able to solo all the time. ive NEVER been in an XP party. ive only partied up to run instance dungeons with Innercircle crew. and being able to pop on for 30 min and knock out a kill quest is nice too. and the quest xp scales nicely with your levels

Is WOW good? I've heard some great things and some not so great things about it and I don't want to blow the 50 dollars and start dishing out cash every month. How much does it cost per month, anyways? I just want an online game that lets you play for a little bit at a time and still build up your character. ^.^
I just want an online game that lets you play for a little bit at a time and still build up your character. ^.^
Then WoW is just for you, my good man. I'm not sure of the exact cost per month..
Blizz has different billing plans, depending on how long you sign up for. It's around
the same as most other MMORPG's.. like $13/month.
See the problem with a pay per month is that I would rarely go on. Sure I can stand the charges but they're just not worth it. I've got a game pass from Blockbuster and I've just had Rogue Agent sitting on my dresser since early January.
Now if anyone of them did a pay as you go method or let me buy minutes or something ahead of time I would definatly get more into online gaming.

Draygone
02-15-2005, 12:43 AM
You don't have to worry about being off from time to time. As I understand it, you gain a small, temporary XP boost for defeating monsters if you've been offline for a while.
And actually, the cost is higher. :( Pay per month is roughly $15. It goes down to $14 and $13 a month if you do the deals where you pay every third/fifth month or something like that, which is cheaper, except you pay more at once. The good news is, you get to choose your server, and you don't have to pay extra for having more than one character. (I've still got that one character from my first server sitting around.)
The deal where you can solo the whole game is nice. Especially for me, as it seems that my computer lags when I'm not the only PC moving around on the screen. Goes down for wandering NPCs also, but that's only noticeable in places like Dolanaar, where along with a whole bunch of townsfolk, there's squirrels running all over the place. (I guess I must be running on a Pentium III if it can't keep up with it all very easily).
Speaking of framerates, in the more calm areas, when I'm not moving, it says the framerate exceeds 70fps. (I play with the FPS counter on all the time.) Is that even possible?

It gets un-freaking-believably fun after level 20.Wasn't the late fun-ness a problem with FFXI for some people? No wait, that one waited until L30, after playing for 3,000,000 hours. Level building seems pretty fast in this game. Not like super-fast, but IMO trying to get XP soloing in this game is as fast (if not faster than) getting XP while in a group in FFXI.
Smurf Taco

Thats from the crappy "invasion of the body snatchers" remake movie. I remember seeing that, honestly, I wish i could find it and see it again, just for that part. I like movies that dont have totally happy endings.
Anyway, seriously, a raid group of about 20 lvl 40-60 people all attacking XR really sucks. Its a newbie area for people around lvl 10 or 12, and most of the time the people that raid it are just griefing to kill off the quest NPC's so that hordies cant turn them in. yes, i know it is a Faction vs Faction game, but i honestly consider that griefing, so i dont do it. I joined in and died once to keep up appearances, but I never intended us to win that battle, and thankfully, my message got through and a bigger bunch of lvl 60 players came over and whooped our asses, LOL.

I quit my paladin on Bloodhoof. Started an undead warlock on Mannoroth. The paladin wasn't so bad, it was just that both the wetlands and darkshire (pretty much the only areas suitable for my level) really, really bored me. My modem also broke way back at the end up december, and prevented me from playing for two weeks, and after getting bogged down by other stuff, I didn't play at all for the month of January, or the first half of Febuary. The novelty really does ware off after a while, but the game is still very fun and much better than any other MMORPG I've ever played.

Man... that was so much fun! A few really high level horde were raiding Astranaar, but they were really nice and weren't killing any players who were lower than they were, even if they tried to pick a fight.
Once they were done killing Sentinels, they kinda stood off to the side and weren't doing anything. I was in a party with Soulzero and Suichi and a couple other people, and all of a sudden I had this crazy notion and said, "Hey, let's go dance with them!" I ran over to the hordies and went /dance, and then not ten seconds later every player in town followed suit. It was absolutely insane. One lady was even blowing kisses at the horde.
My hope was that they'd dance with us, but the hordies just stood there for a moment. Then, they all emoted /no ("Player clearly states NO!"), got on their mounts, and rode away. It was hilarious. XD I was laughing so hard I forgot to take screens, but that's alright. Now my guild credits me with saving Astranaar by busting a move. :lol

The newbie area was INSANE. When you get the level 5 quest to kill the Defias bandit leader and return his head, there must've been about 40 people standing around his spawn spot in a circle, trying to tag him first. We could've done a raid.

That notwithstanding....Granted WoW is the best MMORPG out there, way better than the crappy MUD's I played before. But I'm willing to say that WoW is one also one of the best games I've ever played (top 5, for sure). There really is a great deal more strategy than I've seen from other MMORPGS, and that I've experienced in previous games. Add the social aspect, the really quite outstanding balance, tons of options... I avoided it like the plauge because I feared I'd be addicted and it'd ruin my life. I'm addicted and it's ruining my life, but, it's a pretty great experience in the meantime.

Out of curiosity, what is death like for races besides the night elves, as I'm under the impression each race's death is a bit different. Elves warp back to a nearby well, and are a spirit thing with doubled speed (and are able to jump despite having absolutely no appendages:p), with the surrounding area blue with a swirly blur effect.
Smurf Taco
03-01-2005, 12:10 AM
Most other races all have the same death (not like Night Elf though). They pretty much just die, are spirits in the nearest grave yard, and have to go back to their body. No one else has the spirit whisp like Night Elves though, they're the only ones with that much of a speed bonus when dead. Just one of their racial abilities.
Omnislash024
03-01-2005, 12:41 AM
Didn't know that. I guess that's why night elves always seem to get the the place where we die alot faster.
Sampson

All deaths are the same. Except in other parts of the world you come to at a graveyard, not a well, and you're a ghost not a spirit (wisp).

One of my favorite things about WoW in relation to other MMORPGS is the lack of major penalty for dying. Dying is already an annoying enough penalty, we don't need anything additional experience detriment or anything. Good design decision, Blizzard.

1. I wouldn't mind joining all you suckers on Doomhammer, but it seems to be one of the most populated servers, are there crowding issues?
2. I sometimes get into the mood for some PVP. How do the PVP servers work? Are they fight anyone anywhere at anytime?

Thief of Dreams

the only problems with crowds is in the capitol cities, just like jeuno.
and on the pvp servers, well they are gankfests. if you want to do it when you are in the mood, pve allows you to always be pvp flaged, or only do it when you want.
and you will need to download all the patches i belive. but i could be wrong...
Smurf Taco
05-08-2005, 07:07 PM
1) When I played I was on the most crowded server at the time... and besides the huge cities, I never experienced any lag.
2) I forget the exact rules of PVP servers, but as long as you keep to yourself, there shouldn't be much problem. In big cities, there's not much chance of an attack since you would need an enormous amount of people in multiple raid groups to hold your own against city guards plus all the players inside. When questing and leveling though, I was only ganked once... it really doesn't happen very often. Oh, and Battlegrounds should be opening soon, but I forget all that was involved in that though.
3) No idea.

Joining the party, eh? No problem.
1. Doomhammer is, on average, at "Medium" population. Other servers are regularly at "High" population, if they aren't maxed and queued.
2. PVP servers differ due to the different PVP rulesets.
a. Normal servers leave it up to the player to decide PVP. Your flag will only go up if you type /pvp, or attack an opposing faction member, OR if you heal, buff or revive someone who is flagged.
b. In PVP rulesets, your flag will go up if you enter a yellow (contested) or red (enemy) territory, or attack an opposing faction member OR heal, buff or revive someone who is flagged. But if you are in a green (friendly) zone, you can only be attacked by PVPers if you attack first, and vice versa when you are in enemy territory.
3. I'm pretty sure all the patches get lumped into one, single download. Blizzard's Downloader works like BitTorrent, so you'll probably be uploading to other people downloading the patch (unless you turn off P2P connections, which will slow your download rate).
So, uh, yeah.

But if you are in a green (friendly) zone, you can only be attacked by PVPers if you attack first Okay, that doesn't make sense. You can attack other people in green zones, but they can't attack you unless you attack them?

Okey dokey. Ryner the Paladin is alive and well on Doomhammer. I hit level 5 and I'm all done with the newbie area, about to head to city #2. Hope to talk to you suckers soon.
And I say suckers in a friendly and joking way, Mr. Give-Ryner-Negative-Reputation-Because-He-Called-Everyone-Suckers-Even-Though-He-Was-Clearly-Not-Being-Mean-And-I-Guess-I-Dont-Know-Why-I-Gave-Him-A-Negative-Point.

It makes sense if you remember that green zones to you are red to them. While they are in enemy territory, I guess they had to give PvP players a break by letting them sit back and watch PvP on their home turf without getting ganked in return. You can still attack anybody with their PvP flag up, but if they don't have it up, then they have to attack you first.
So, uh, yeah.

Human. I sticks with what I knows.
I sent some people self-describing mail. I also beat ViT in a duel. In fact, I killed him. That's impossible to do in a duel, so I must have hit him really hard.

Okay, I seriously need help. This computer just doesn't seem to want to run WoW very easily. Sometimes there's lag, sometimes there isn't (just now there was a ton of lag, causing me to die). Sometimes the game freezes, and sometimes I get a blue screen that either shuts the program down or makes the game lag (most frequently resulting in me dying since I'm defenseless). Either I get this fixed, or I'm cancelling my account and going to some random MMO console RPG (as I wouldn't want to deal with this problem with any other game).
For starters, I'm wondering which requirements I'm meeting or exceeding, or if there's a requirement or two that I somehow am missing. Of the requirements, here's what I know I have.
Windows 98
512 MB RAM (I think; not sure where to check)
DirectX 9 (recently re-downloaded just in case)
Definately more than 4 GB of HD space
52X CD-ROM drive
Broadband connection (not sure what speed; I'm aware there's more than one)
Two-button scroll-wheel mouse
The rest of the stuff listed on the box I'm uncertain about and/or dunno how to find out. Can anybody with Windows 98 point out to me where I can find out the rest?

Your problems are:
1) Windows 98
2) 512 RAM
To check how much ram, right click on my computer and go to properties.

"511.0 MB RAM" Okay, so I'm one MB off. I still exceed the minimum requirement by a lot.
And aside from it being a minimal requirement, what else is wrong with running it on Windows 98? I would figure that if I at least met all minimal requirements, I wouldn't have too much trouble. And yet I do. Though if I could get Windows XP, I would. Would getting XP improve it by that much?
Where do I find out the Processor? I'm not sure if I'm running on Pentium III or IV, and the PC case doesn't say on it.

If you're experiencing jerky movements and poor fps, then it's most likely due to your system specs. If you haven't tried reducing some of the settings in Video Options, try that. Your RAM should be OK (I run at 512 with a 900 Mhz AMD Duron and experience a few seconds of stopping while other players in places like Ironforge are loaded into the cache), but if your processor isn't up to snuff, try upgrading that, if possible.
Also: check your video card and see if it's on WoW's list of supported video cards here. (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww0830p)
If you're movement is smooth, but there is button delay or any sort of input lag, then it's a problem with either your connection (my guess is it isn't, in your case) or the realm's server is having issues/is at medium-high to high population at the moment.
EDIT: To find out your video card type and processor type, go to your Control Panel and double-click System. The Device Manager should come up (it's been a while since I worked with a 9X OS). Look under Display Adapter for your video card type. Your processor type and speed should be listed when the System window opens up.
Again, it's been some years since I used a 9X OS so I may be wrong about a few things.
So, uh, yeah.

Can't upgrade the processor. Not my computer.
Dunno what video card I have. Don't see a Display Adaptor option.
Dunno what the problem with the lag is. It varies from time to time. Sometimes there isn't any, sometimes there's a little, last time there was a ton. I play on Doomhammer, and I never see the server below Medium level. The real problem is how the computer locks up from time to time. It usually happens during the first few attacks I take when encountering an enemy, though occasionally it just happens as I'm wandering around. I tried putting it at the lowest settings before, but it didn't help any. I've tried re-installing WoW a few times, but not only did that not work, but it takes forever for the darn thing to download and install any large update.

I only stick with one MMORPG at a time. I quit Everquest for Final Fantasy, and quit that for WoW.
...Actually, I quit Everquest because my PS2 started doing the DRE thing and I couldn't play it anymore. But I would've quit it for Final Fantasy.

(In general chat)
Guy: Where do you get a Tear of Tilloa?
Me: Call Tilloa fat.
Guy: Where is she?
Me: You say it in General.
Guy: Tilloa is fat!
Guy: Now what?
Me: Check your mail, you should have a letter from her with a tear inside.
Guy: Nice.
(Five minutes later)
Guy: I still havn't gotten my letter!

Okay, I'm getting a job that'll net me roughly $800 a month, and I'm thinking about possibly getting a computer of my own. Anybody have any idea how much it would cost to get a PC that met all the recommended stuff listed on the box?

4 Gold.
Depends on where you shop (or if you build your own). You can get a nice computer for cheap nowadays.
You guys still playing? I've gotten really into it since summer started, my 35 Shaman is starting to look cool and kick asses. Battlegrounds is fun, but I can't wait until I'm high enough for Alterac Valley. This game really rewards you the more time you put into it.

My MMORPG experience extends to a brief stint in EQ, mainly so brief because of PC issues, and Guild Wars, which I like pretty well, especially since there's no monthly fee. It feels like a generic version of EQ or WoW, though, as there's only one race and 6 classes, plus you only go to Lv. 20.
I've debated getting WoW and just don't feel like paying $50 + monthly fees for a game I may only play sporadically. Plus I have other things to do, like working on RPGM.

I might eventually get this game... I'm unsure, I already pay monthly on Runescape, and PSO BB... $14 a month so far... perhaps one day when I'm not in my first year at college.:p
I've been wanting to play though.
