Sony and Namco create new game company

    http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=7424

It seems that Sony has stopped acting as if the competition doesn't exist and is bringing Namco Bandai in with them on the fight.

Is this just a desperate move by Sony? Does this mean the end of Tales and Super Robot Wars on the DS? Does this mean a better lineup on the PS3? Only time will tell.

What we can get from this is that there will now be more exclusives coming to the PS3. It should also bring a significant sales boost for the PS3 in Japan, where Namco Bandai game series tend to sell much better.

    Bloomberg.com reports:

Sony Corp., the world's largest maker of game consoles, said its PlayStation unit will develop games with Namco Bandai Holdings Inc. to help take share from Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co.

Namco Bandai will own 51 percent of the venture, named Cellius Inc., with Sony holding the rest, Sony said in a faxed release today. The venture will begin operations on March 6.

Cellius will use Sony's Cell chip, which powers PlayStation 3, to create games for the console and content for mobile phones and personal computers, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said today. He would not give earnings forecasts or other details.

The alliance may help Sony recoup the 200 billion yen ($1.65 billion) it spent developing the Cell with International Business Machines Corp. and Toshiba Corp. Sony is expecting the chip, which makes the PS3 about 35 times faster than the PS2, to attract gamers with sharper graphics and more complex play.

The Cell chip is also part of Sony's strategy to beat Microsoft and Apple Computer Inc. in controlling the digital home, a future network linking televisions, music players, game consoles and other appliances to the Internet.

Wow, forgot all about that Tales DS game.

Sorta got lost in the mega-uber Square Enix surge.

Remember the Tales DS game? Anybody? Yeah. That used to be impressive.

So basically the new company will have to make new games for the ps3, and that titles like Soul Calibur and the Tales of Destiny games from Namco can still go to different consoles?

Am I kinda close with that guess?

Re: Sony and Namco create new game company

pretty much. this isnt effecting namco's existing titles at all. they're just the majority owner of a new company that will develop for the sony systems.

Why would you assume that? Cellius is not Namco. its a new company owned by Sony and Namco. There's no reason to believe that Namco would send one of it's biggest properties over to the new company, possibly taking it away from everyone who has worked on it in the past.

Re: Sony and Namco create new game company

SCIII came to PS2 because of Sony (I forget the EXACT reason). If they now own a joint company I think Namco will still keep it on a Sony system.

SC3 came out on the PS2 because thats what system SC2 sold the most copies on.

Actually it sold most on GCN IIRC.

EDIT: Best I could find, 2003 though.

Sony gave Namco a big wad of cash to make SCIII a PS2 exclusive if I find an official source for that info I'll let you know.

I mean in one year alone selling 1.3+ million units for SCII I can see why Sony did it. Now that they own a business together though, I can see Sony waving shares in thier faces (by either buying 51% of the shares, which Sony can do easy; or sell all thier shares, plunging the company in the dumps) whenever they want to support another company. Basically "We control you, or we kick you in groin with Cellius." I can see Sony doing this (but only if Namco REALLY wants control of Cellius though). But I have Sony hate too... so meh.
