    Wireless Networking Software

Alright, so I have a Lynksys Wireless adapter for my computer. My parents have a wireless router, but I am having constant problems keeping a steady internet connection. Right now I am using the Windows XP wireless software for the connection, and I've been told that it has alot of problems. I'm tired of constantly loosing the connection every five minutes, and need to try some diffrent sort of connection software, but I don't have anything that came with the adapter, and so far all my internet searches have been fruitless.

Anyone know what may be wrong, or even some sort of decent Wireless Network software that won't kill my computer and doesn't cost a whole lot? (Also, my dad is a network admin and he set up the basic IP addressing and stuff for my computer, so the addressing is pretty good, I just think it's the software.)

    Help!

You need software for a wireless network?

Sheeit. Can't you just edit the router's controls through a browser?

    It's usually http://192.168.1.1

    Right?

Depends on the router as to the address it starts with.

Honestly I haven't dealt with wireless much as I prefer wired, well in my house anyway, but you could check to see if Lynksys has a driver program for their adapter. Beyond that I don't know of any wireless connection software (though I imagine it exists). Some open source OS might be better at it, but then you would have to use that OS, and learn how it works.

Seems your dad should know what the problem is, given he's a Network Admin. But really I would imagine the problem either lies with your router, or things interfering with the signal from the router. Though your dad might have already mentioned this, some wireless routers are directional (send signal in one direction only) and some are omni directional. I believe the omni-directional ones produce a slightly weaker signal, but of course have the freedom of being omni-directional. But the router should have on it what it's range and such are.

I probably should know more about this, but I don't use it, so. Wired is much more reliable and faster, for when you don't really need wireless.

But yeah I would look up info on the router itself and make sure you have no other devices interfering with it.

I don't think I have other devices personally, but it seems that my wireless adapter likes to pick up the other wireless networks in my area, even though I have it set to where it should only choose our router in preference. We've tried to set up a password, but somehow when we do, it won't accept the password from my computer. I'll try the browser set up, rather then through Windows when my father and I can get the time.

          Thanks for the advice.

            Re: Wireless Networking Software

I once had a linksys wireless router.
That thing was horrible. Same problems you're mentioning, but absolutely nothing I did helped for more than a day.

            I ended up returning it.

Yeah I'm not too big on wireless routers

If it makes you feel better, if you search for "wireless router problems" it comes back with 3,770,000 results, a number that big should make anyone feel better

Why don't you just wire it?

Here I come Pav, like the Kool-Aid man barging into a funeral! Oh yeah!
