noobie question about making a game

    heyllo everyone ^.^

I am new to this site and just have a few questions about the game that I wanna make

now I dont expect you guys to tell me how it can be done ( unless you wanna be extra helpful ^.^). I (mainly) just wanna know if it can actually be done.

I have never made a game with any program before so im kinda new to this. But I have done some programming (web sites)

the first question is about the data transfer thing that is in this game. To my understanding, if your making a game and you run out of the game memory, not memory on your memory card, you can make another file on a different memory card and kind of link it with the first save. Which has all avalible memory on it. (meaning, the equivilent to some one who has just started a new game). Is this right or does it do something else?

next question is in reguard to the battle system. I've seen a couple of threads that said something about being able to have a mini game (im guessing) where you have to press /_\, [], X, O in the right time to complete this event. My question is, can you somehow incorporate this in the battle system? This is what I basically want to do, the battle starts, enemies show up, you pick attack, and a sequence of buttons (/_\, [], X, O....and maybe directional buttons if possible) show up on the screen. Now, these buttons only show up one at a time, but they each have a timer on them. So you have to press the correct button that it shows at the right time to continue your attack. Can this be done? (*crosses fingers*). Also, can I do the same thing with enemies in reguard to counter attacks? For example, if you are in the middle of your combo attack, the enemy has a % of countering your attack. If this happens (if you have a high enough agility and dex stat), you have a chance to counter their counter attack. Based on the same battle system i just explained, but the timer for this will be faster. Also, the button commands will not be random, they will be a certain set of buttons depending on what move you wish to do. Can this be done? (*crosses fingers AND toes*)

    Thank you

    P.S. (*also crosses eyes* >.<)

    ^.^V

    UPDATE: sorry about the double thread, I don't know how i did that ^.^;

    You pressed submit twice

anyways if youre completely new to the RPGM series starting with 2 is in my opinion too overwhelming, I only started now using RM2 so I dont really have any answers besides how you got 2 threads

I suggest buying the Prima Guide, I got it now and it explains everything and takes you step by step on how to make a basic game

    Welcome to the Pav!

to your first question, i'm not so sure. read page 49 of the rpg maker 2 game manual.

to your second question, it sounds like what you want can be done.

play some rpgm2 demos/games available here too. the broadsword demo has a cool battle system where you press buttons in succession to get combo attacks.

Okay, here is a great idea. The countering thing can be done but with a lot of scripting. I am not sure how to do it, but I will look in to it. The button thing can also be done, but again it will take work. You will need to change the battle system script(s) they have already made. My best suggestion would be to experiment with this. I myself learn to use the game by trial and error. I would love to own the guide, but it would only cause me to make things to hard. ( I have a bad habit of that.) Why don't you look at my other posts in the forum. Most are in RPG Maker General. My post is titled 9th Chronicle. Good luck with you game. By the way what are you going to call it?

            tm?

Can you give us a description on what the game is about, you said you've been planning it so can you give us an idea on what to expect, and to get a better idea on what you're looking for if any future questions arise?

Re: noobie question about making a game

Afraid i don't really share with the praises about the prima guide being lavished here. Be honest i thought the guide was pretty worthless and i regretted the money i spent and would have liked a refund. It really doesn't explain much IMHO, and just sort of lists everything - which the game already does for you and has a help feature. I found the game manual of more use, and it didn't cost me extra.

Most of the guide is a walkthrough for Fu Ma - which is odd because no one buys an RPG Maker game for the sample game. So i woudln't bother with the guide if i was you unless you are interested in the sample game - but that's just my opinion.

I don't think you can link data through different memory cards. Would be nice if you could - but i think it's more like just making a sequel if you could call it like that. Nothing important really carries over, meaning anything specific earned during the first game won't be able to be transfered to the second. So it's really not all that useful to do if you're trying to find a way to get around memory problems. It's not like putting in disc 2 on Final Fantasy 7.

Far as your button combination strategy for battles (sounds a lot like that legend of legaia game for ps), i have no clue how you would do such a thing. Sounds extremely complicated if it's possible, so you may want to consider something else.

The Prima guide isn't worthless: its just not worth as much as say, a Ham and cheese sandwich...

I know that you CAN link MCs in RM1, but I think that little trick is limited to the first one only...

It's just like making a new game on RPG maker 2. You can't carry over any aquired information or data. It's basically just starting over with the same starting material as your last. You could in theory reconfigure the beginning member statistics to try and pretend it's the same game, but unless your game follows a very strict progress it would be very difficult to guess what level and what items the player actually got and aquired on the first game.

I heard that the thing in your first question in in fact, possible, but i don't know how (sorry)
Your second question: very cool idea! yes, it could be done.
for instance, you can edit the battle scripts-where it has the enemy attack, you can set a certain button to block attacks. You can also do the other things you mentioned.
SORRY ABOUT THE MULTI-POST, HOW CAN I DELETE THE OTHERS?

Re: noobie question about making a game

You would have to have an input:button in the enemy attack script, then if the button was correct, turn on Battle Flag 0 for the character who is defending. However, I can't quite remember exactly how you'd do that, since I haven't touched any RPG Maker in forever.

Okay, so basically, you CAN do it, but you lose any/all ...everything that the player has amassed thus far, eh?

Right, you'll loose any aquired information during the progress of the first game. It's basically just making a new game really. I don't see how anyone could make much use of it, unless they had a very strict and linear style of gameplay that doesn't allow for much variation.
