Re: I hate college
Hey old man alzar, that's right around the corner for you.Participants in a new study, all more than 70 years old, were tested up to four times between 1993 and 2000 on their ability to recall 10 common words read aloud to them.
Time to get Life Alert and stock up on aarp magazines.

Re: I hate college
That's a very cool study and article, but it's been beaten to death into me that correlation != causation. I think saying "go to college, become a stupid old man" is jumping the gun a bit (not to say the article is exactly doing this, because they do backpedal some after the first paragraph).
For example, maybe it's just that, regardless of academic history, people who have strong memory recall do not maintain this strength later in life, and instead decay to recall of average ability. And maybe it just happens that people with strong memory recall tend to have high overall intelligence, and people who are intelligent tend to go to college.
So yeah, I bet going to college is not the real cause, and I think if they want to do a follow-up, they should break it down into four groups, not two:
1. high IQ people who went to college
2. low IQ people who went to college
3. high IQ people who did not go to college
4. low IQ people who did not go to college
If what they're saying is true, then people in both groups 1 and 2 will have working memory degenerate faster than those in groups 3 and 4 when they get older. What I'm guessing will happen (assuming high IQ is strongly correlated with strong working memory) is 1 and 3 will degenerate faster (although it probably wouldn't get WORSE than 2 and 4, it would just converge to 2 and 4's ability).
and thats the end of that chapter

Re: I hate college
yeah, partying and getting laid is such a drag.
now i've dispensed with my cheap humour for this post, i'd like to add that since over here at least, since about 97% people or some stupid number are ending up with some kind of higher education qualification (even if its in puppetry or Robin Hood studies or w/e) and the crazy idea that 'a degree is just a degree' which although stupid holds true in a lot of cases...
well, there's very little point to my degree. i'll be the first to admit it. so when i finally get out of Uni in 18 month's time, i'm left with no prospects that i couldn't have gone for anyway.
its a philosophy degree.
it seemed like a good idea at the time.Last edited by Arcaite; 01-13-2007, 01:00 PM."like i said, i'm not that smart"

Re: I hate college
I hate college solely because of those people. I'm not paying 6k+ a semester NOT to learn.Last edited by Red Dragon; 01-13-2007, 12:58 PM.

Re: I hate college
yeah, as far as i'm concerned, the 'college life' is for the rich kids who prefer their music too loud to talk over, their drinks numerous enough to ruin their week and their attention spans woefully short.
*shrug* not that my attention span's all that great.
at any rate, i'm in agreement with ^. i'm too cheap and possess too much discretion for much in the way of partying and too aesthetically unappealing for much in the way of getting laid.

Re: I hate college
for students though, it really depends on where you are. over here, inner-city universities and colleges have far more commuters, it also relies on the distance between where you're from and where you learn. *shrug* like you'd expect. my point is basically that student commuting is very variable.
where i am, commuting for students is definitely NOT the norm. though 2/4 of my housemates spent all of last year driving in from the next town over, so... meh. ^_^
i'm sure i had a point when i started babbling.Last edited by Arcaite; 01-13-2007, 02:05 PM."like i said, i'm not that smart"
