    Gates: Nintendo our "toughest" foe

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6164053.html

When it comes to console rivalries, many think the most bitter feud is between Sony and Microsoft. Apparently Bill Gates doesn't. In an interview with Japanese TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Microsoft chairman and world's richest man says he sees another console maker as the Xbox 360's primary rival.

"The strength of Nintendo...in the portable space, has been very impressive," Gates said in a video interview currently viewable on YouTube. "[It's] surprised a lot of people, I think, [that] and the Wii. We see Nintendo as our toughest competition."

Given that the interview was with Tokyo TV, it is possible Gates' comments were about the Japanese market, where the Xbox 360 trails far behind both the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Naturally, many fanboys have taken Gates' comments as another indicator of Sony's greatly exaggerated demise. That viewpoint, though, overlooks the possibility Gates was intentionally slighting Sony in public as part of its ongoing war of words with the electronics giant.

Well, right now, Nintendo IS their main rival. Sony is in third place, and with the PS3 sitting on shelves in US AND Japan, they're not going to be a threat any time soon.

The 360 is in the lead in the US, with the Wii in second place. of course they're more concerned with Nintendo than Sony.

PS3 won't be coming into its own until the big games come out late this year and early next. Until then it's a Blu-ray player with some games.

I'm just sick of video game magazines and stuff always saying PS3 vs 360 leaving Wii in the ditch. At least maybe now people will think of Nintedo in there debates around who will "win".

PSM explained it best in their big PS3 vs 360 feature this month.

            Why not Wii?
Although Nintendo's new Wii console is doing great, we've excluded it from our comparison because it's a very different type of system. PS3 and Xbox 360 offer the same types of experiences, and are going after the same types of game players. The platforms are similar enough that you only really need one, which is why we need to settle which is best at what. So no disrespect intended, Nintendo fans!

I can understand why Gates thinks that. The 360 still hasn't sold 10 million according to nexgenwars.com which is the best guess anyone has as to what the sales number are like. The Wii has exploded out of the gate and coming up on 4 million and is still sold out in most places. There are still developers I work with that can't pick one up due to the lines of people at stores on days they receive shipments.

Nintendo can get both the Japanese and American market...thats something the 360 is severely struggling with.

I'm quite amazed at how well the Wii is doing, even though it's the weakest of the three next-gen consoles out there now.

But this is only the beginning. Who knows how the console wars will turn out in the near future?

it may be the weakest graphics-wise, but it's the strongest where it counts. it's the most interactive gaming experience I've ever had the pleasure of trying.

sounds like a ploy to weaken sony to me. he sees them slipping, so he's gonna jump on it and be like "pfft, sony? nah, we're not even worried about them." gates dosn't seem like the kind of person who would purposefully glorify what he viewed as real competition. if he wanted to try and best nintendo, he come out and say they were nothing.

also, stop saying console wars. AND STOP WATCHING G4!
