Did some looking around, and the story is based on actual history. There's also a 60's movie called The 300 Spartans, so this new one seems to be more of a remake but also based on Miller's style from his books.

I think there was already a topic about this, but I'm in the same boat as IRC. It didn't seem that interesting at first, but I really want to see it now.

It's not based on his style, it's based on a miniseries he did. It's pretty good, I read it when it was released (month by month).

It's not really meant to be historical, is it? I mean, it's a movie based on a graphic novel which is based on a historical event.

And I think the whole overblown feel really fits the battle of Thermopylae. At first, I thought that it would be too ridiculous and mess up the facts. But when I really think about it, gross exaggeration is part of the tradition of Thermopylae and the 300 Spartans, ranging as far back as Herodotus calculating Xerxes' forces at over 5,000,000.

So, I think it will be cool.

Prescreenings are EXTREMELY positive...and the IMDB crowd is usually pretty harsh but fair. Right now its average is 9.0.

The forum users on IMDb are crap, but overall the IMDb users voted The Shawshank Redemption as the second best movie ever, so they can't be all bad.

Ah! This is the movie I saw a trailer for and couldn't think of what it was. Looks pretty cool, and i'll see any movie that plays Nine Inch Nails during the trailer.
