Like almost everything else when comparing the quality of the three games, the answer is "it depends." 1's battle system is easy to balance and can move quickly, but is not very flexible and offers no "feel" to it. The upswing is that you can import custom enemy graphics from the game's Sprite Maker. 2's battle system is hard to make anything good out of, but is far, FAR more flexible than the others; in speed and "feel," it's between 1 and 2. 3's battle system is a lot like 1's, but even less flexible and much slower. However, of the three, it does a much better job of making you feel like real things are happening, and of course is the most graphically impressive.
So you should expect different answers from everyone. For my money, I'd have to give the "worst battle system" award to RPGM1, but it's a close call all three ways.
2 had the worst. In spite of the ability to make awesome graphics and custom monsters with the VFX editor it was hard to even make anything work right. I'm sure 2's reputation for being too difficult mostly comes from people who couldn't get their weapons to work at all. It is impossible to make brand new weapons, spells, and much of anything else outside of Hard mode.
Um... simple_man, you said that you always won with RM3's battle system. That really has nothing to do with the system, it's more a matter of how hard you're making your monsters.
I think 3's was the worst. With 1 it was just right with the speed and stuff, 2 was actually the best out of all of them IMO because you could make battles go really fast and put extra features in it. In regards to 3, it's a psuedo ATB, but it's turn-based. That's just stupid. Plus outside of swift and even then, it's difficult to make the battle pace tolerable.
Quote of the moment - "When you cut down a tree, don't stand near it."
I agree with you to a point, Crimson. I don't particullarly like the graphic limitations, but bringing the characters into the veiwpoint in battles I really liked. Now if you could actually make an event battle (you know where you can have text during the battle and such) that would be awesome. I think the best thing would be to have the flexability and VFX Editor of 2 and combined it with 3. I would be a happy camper then.
