    My Story Plan--Goblin Heart

Following my Dragon Fantasy debacle, as well as the dissolving of my "development team" of moons past, I spent some time developing a new story for a new game I hope to get to when I have time. Right now, I have a story fleshed out, but it's still in the production stages so it may change overtime. So, I thought I'd post some of what I've got here to get some feedback.

And I'm working alone this time. No team or nothing. And I'll be using RPG Maker 1 as my template.

The title is called "Goblin Heart". And the story goes like this.....

"Thornwood was like many other kingdoms—a prosperous and peaceful nation.

Once upon a time in this very kingdom, there existed a deep friendship between Thornwood’s beautiful princess Reine—and a Goblin named Mogi.

Considered a threat to the humans, Goblins were categorized as monsters to be dealt with by the mighty justices of Thornwood’s Knights. But Mogi abandoned his homeland in the realm of the Underworld to live peacefully, and secretly, among the world of Light—inhabited by Humans. Having faced much hardship and persecution by Humans who do not understand him, Mogi found solace within the only Human that dared to take him under her wing and be his only friend—Princess Reine.

Their friendship began during their prospective youths, and continued throughout the years; a friendship they were forced to conceal. As Princess Reine grew into adulthood, she saw less and less of Mogi. On the eve of her betrothal to a noble Thornwood knight, Mogi seemed to disappear from sight.

On the night of her wedding to Sir Orius, the noble Thornwood Knight who won her heart, the kingdom was suddenly attacked by Monsters in a brutal and unforgiving assault that left many dead. The king and queen were murdered and Sir Orius, who fought valiantly, lost his own life trying to protect them.

The attack was lead by a horrible Goblin Lord named Galidorn, the ruler of the Underworld. Amassing a seemingly invincible army of monsters, he orchestrated this vicious raid against Thornwood in the hopes of conquering the human race with Thornwood as his throne—for the Underworld was slowly dying out due to starvation and plague. The Monsters were in desperate need of expanding their territories beyond their own realm, and sought the world of Light to carry out their ambitions.

Galidorn summoned his Warlocks to erect an impenetrable paling around Thornwood so no outsider would dare try and breach his plans for global conquest. Within moments, monsters began to spread throughout the land, exterminating the helpless humans and any would-be hero foolish enough to stand in their way.

Princess Reine, trapped within the castle, was forced to marry Galidorn—she was fortunate to have been allowed to breathe….for Galidorn is not considered to be merciful enough to let ANY prisoner live without reason. Thus, he instead forces a proposal to her—marry him or die. With little choice, the Princess reluctantly agrees.

Thus, Mogi emerges from solitude—with the sole purpose of saving the only human friend he has, as well as the kingdom for which she would rightly rule someday. He must dare to play a hero in a world that does not understand him, and sees him as a monster to be slain. With the odds stacked against him from both sides—the god-fearing Humans and the Monsters that now shackle them in fear and despair---Mogi must find his heart and courage…."

SO, basically, the story is about a Goblin who abandoned his place in the Underworld (where the monsters exist) to live peacefully in the Human world--since the Underworld teems with chaos and confusion. He befriends a Human girl, but not just any girl--a princess of a prominent Kingdom. The game explores prejudice, in a sense, since you ARE playing a Goblin of sorts--a kind-hearted Goblin, mind you--the peace-loving Humans of the Thornwood kingdom are quick to judge you as hostile (some may even attack you.) As the hero, you are faced with two obstacles--the evil Monsters that have conquered Thornwood, and the humans that see YOU as a possible threat.

The goal is saving Princess Reine and defeating Galidorn. It sounds cliche, but the twist is....you're a Goblin, and Humans don't like you. I'm trying to make it so that you're forced to convince the Humans that you're not a Monster--but the only hope they have left in saving Thornwood. In other words, the story is centered on prejudices, earning trust, gaining unlikely allies and beating the odds stacked against you.

Well! That's all I have. Feel free to offer any comments, criticisms or advice. I want to further make developments to the core story and everything else inbetween before I work on the actual game, and your guys' help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, being that I vividly remember the times when you had the banner of your RPGM2 Dev Team (and thought it was pretty damn cool), how could I not respond to this?

I like the concept. It sounds appealing in the same way that Phantom Brave was appealing (to me): slightly cheesy, yet heartfelt and fun. I'd recommend remembering the strength of that game's story (lots of diverse NPC characters with their own goals and prejudices) and also its weaknesses (a final boss with absolutely no plot development). As far as advice? I'd say try to work Reine into the story as much as possible, and if possible, open up gameplay features (minigames, more shops and quests, etc.) as the humans warm up to you. It's the kind of reward that RPG Gamers absolutely love.

Overall, I'd say it sounds good, and is probably one of the more original concepts I've seen. I'd like to know a little more about the gameplay and world, if you've got those planned.

      Thanks ^_^

Well, the world consists of the standard-fare Human realm--where humans live their normal lives. Normal Kingdom-fantasy-type stuff. It also consists of an Underworld where Monsters have lived for centuries. Basically, their world is dying out due to starvation and a hideous plague, so under their leader Galidorn, they seek to expand their territories....at the expense of Humans.

The game centers around Thornwood--mostly, but the continent (haven't thought of its name yet) is the world in which you explore. Thornwood is the center of the continent--the mightiest kingdom in all the land.

As difficult as it is coming up with something totally original these days (at least for me) this is the best I could do However, it was an interesting concept to say the least and I wanted to develop it further--(originally I thought it was kinda dumb, but then I saw its potential.) I strive to make stories as original as they can possibly be--trying to avoid major cliches. There comes a time when I must implement some borrowed elements in order to move the story forward in a sense.

As far as the game mechanics are concerned, I'm thinking of putting something in place, but I'm not sure what to do. I'd like the gameplay to be as unique as the story itself. First of all, you're a Goblin, so that's pretty unique in itself (if you recall Gobli, of course!) You gave me some excellent ideas about minigames, shops and other things so I'll take those into consideration.

Great story, Misty. My chief concern is that breaking said barrier will degenerate into a fetch quest for 5 magical thingymajigs: but I'm sure you can think of a much more orginial approach
If you were using RPGM3, I'd be able to offer more advice about working with the system, but as it stands I wish you good luck and wish I owned a dex drive!

          Re: My Story Plan--Goblin Heart

Much obliged, Hito! I suppose I COULD use RPG Maker 3 as a template. It'd certainly be a lot easier to develop the story components

Yeah, I'm also concerned with the magical-fetch quest type thing , too--the funny thing is, I was thinking of doing something like that, but too many other games have done that so many times already. I was considering starting Mogi off somewhere on a remote area of the continent. He has to travel his way to Thornwood Castle as his final destination while stopping by towns, villages and dungeons along the way--no fetching for crystals, magical relics or anything like that. Just a straightforward journey to the castle--a difficult journey, mind you

I'm thinking about quests that the player can perform to earn Human trust as well as some temporary allies. Also, there will be plenty of cutscenes detailing Mogi, Princess Reine and even Galidorn (there's an interesting twist about him that you'll unravel near the end.)

          I'll post more developments soon!

            Re: My Story Plan--Goblin Heart

If Galidorn is Mogi's father (or brother, or lover, or former best friend) then I say ick to Galidorn. The story itself seems pretty simple and I wouldn't mind playing a game that doesn't give you the typical hero.

I would imagine that in Mogi's quest to free Princess Reine, he will either divert the Goblin hordes back to the Underworld (where they would seemingly meet their end anyway) or find a peaceful solution that allows the Goblins to co-exist above their Underworld, but his quest had never really been to do that and it just sort of works out that way as an indirect result of his saving the Princess, which was his singular motive.

Basic fantasy fare has been done to death, and even playing as a Goblin anti-hero type will not delude many people into not yawning over a world they've seen a gajillion times. I hope you have some fresh ideas to keep your world out of the standard cesspool muck that is a fantasy world.

It has the potential to be really unique, but all in all, I'm just not very interested. Perhaps I'll become more intrigued when I discover what makes your fantasy continent tick.

That's pretty presumptuous and perhaps unfair, as Misty hasn't said anything about the ending, or for that matter much about Galidorn. But you bring up a good point--how will the fate of the Goblins work its way into Mogi's quest to confront Galidorn/save Reine? (This is a rhetorical question, of course.) (Great taste!/Less filling!)

One way it could pan out is that the starvation and plague is Galidorn's doing, so the two goals would fit well together. Of course, this is pretty "convenient" and you likely have something better planned out anyhow. The "peaceful solution" Rick mentions really wouldn't be such a bad thing, given that a major theme of the game is building trust between the two races, and has the potential to be a more direct effect of saving Reine. That is, if you do save Reine...

I must have missed it before when you said this would be in RPGM1; I'd thought you mentioned somewhere your next project would be in 3. For me it's a shame, since I don't have a DexDrive, but I've got to admit that 1 might make more sense for a game like this, for a world (or at least half a world) of goblins would be pretty hard to pull off using 3, even if the Underworld could kick ass using the Dungeon Editor.

Personally, I think threes map maker is the best of the bunch. I can spend hours just making one great map.

I agree. Although there is a kingdom, a princess and monsters--stuff you often see in ordinary games---you may be surprised at how the world may be arranged. Taking your concerns into account, Rick, you've already given me a splendid idea that I want to mess around with. Or even better--if you have any suggestions or tips for me, that would also help too. I'm really glad I came here first!

Funny you should mention that, because there's a plot twist in regards to that very revelation. It also explains why Mogi abandoned the Underworld to live with the Humans. It wasn't because he just wanted to live it up with the Humans--there's a deeper reasoning. I won't give it away here! ^_^

Its a great story line, no doubt one of the best ones I've seen.

But one question stands out that I don't think has been asked yet....why does Galidorn need a wife?

Well, Galidorn is a cruel, yet strange creature. And Princess Reine is a very beautiful young girl. Even fat, ugly, evil Goblin Lords have hormones

                          Yup

While I still have not thought up of a name for my "continent", I do have a structure of what it's going to look like. I wanted to keep the spirit of a medieval fantasy world while at the same time edging away from it as well.

I run the risk of stupifying the overall story in a sense, but tell me what you think about this: there will be some sci-fi elements. For example, if you enter a village, there will be evidence of machines and/or technology that provides the essential components to a town's productivity. Same goes with Thornwood as well.

I used to read about Shadowrun back in the 90s so some inspiration draws from that source--only there's no Seattle nor are there "chummers" or internet terrorism.

A small update to the store structure.

Steam-punk is a way to throw in your fantasy elements and still have machinery.

I'm going to take the risk of implanting technology in my world. So when I go ahead and make it, you'll notice how different it is from traditional standardfare fantasy worlds.

                              Taking Wavelength's idea into account....

....that'll be done with Reine having flashbacks of memories shared with the Goblin anti-hero. Not sure how well this will pan out, but it will give the player a pretty good idea of how close their friendship is, as well as instill a degree of empathy towards Mogi's struggles in the Human world. I dare not make it TOO emotional though--but I want it so that you feel attached to the characters in a sense.

The one good thing I can say about a development team is; I got stuff done a lot faster. But since I'm soloing, it's taking longer--I've already started work on the maps and dungeon layouts.

And I STILL have not thought of a continent name yet. More updates soon...
