    Joseph Barbera, RIP

i didn't see a thread about this, so i thought i'd put one up.

the other half of hanna-barbera gone now

cartoon network's been running a card with "Joseph Barbera, 1911-2006" in between shows today.

JB was a truly great man who will be missed greatly. If it wasn't 3:30am here anyway, I'd have a moment of silence in his honor.

Even if Hanna-Barbera's animation was pure ****, I like the characters.

I remember watching all those shows as a kid every saturday morning, and each morning before I went to school, it's sad that people who made such an impact on lives aren't remembered until they die...

Uh, he and William Hanna were VERY well known. I want to agree with Caciss, but I never really liked any of their characters, aside from Tom and Jerry. Most of their other characters were uninspired or just ripped off from other sources/shows.

They did bring a lot to animation as far as reaching new audiences (mainly due to making shows with jokes for kids and adults), but they also cheaped the process out to an insane degree, which paved the way for our traditional (aka horrible) saturday morning/afternoon cartoon animation.

I'm not saying they weren't very well known, the attention kind of faded from them in the early 90's it seems, you hardly ever heard about them after then.

But yeah all the sucky cartoons with cheap animation can be blamed on them somewhat, they did pave the way in that process I'm sure, but quantity for quality, if they animated right we wouldnt have half the cartoons we have by them now

                But....but....Secret Squirrel!

                ...And Quick Draw McGraw!

                ...And Wacky Races!

                But I hated Scooby Doo.

Secret Squirrel wasn't watchable until they re-made it almost 30 years later. :P

As for the rest... eh... pretty one-dimensional characters all around.

I won't argue that, but I still enjoyed them as a kid.

Except Scooby Doo, of course. Even my infantile brain found it to be extremely monotonous.
