    Monster Rancher 2

I started this game up again. I found my CD and now I'm running it off of an emulator so I don't have to worry about memory cards, plus raising monsters takes time so I watch TV in the mean time... (I know bios files if not directly from my own PS1 and what-not are illegal and blah blah please don't hold it against me or make the topic discussing it)

Just beat S Class before my poor monster "Arrow" died, he probably would've lived if I didn't give him a potion to make his Stats raise by Alot (such as my 683 Power turning into 819)... I kinda cheated though using save points so that I would have to start the tourny over and over again.
Never really realized/remembered how tough this game is, they really want you to invest alot of time into making and combining monsters.

I was really just trying to get him to get past the final S-Rank (couldn't freeze him because he died RIGHT AFTER the tourny.) I had another Crab Saurien but when I combined them the stats sucked(almost same exact stats, but I treated him like crap so he couldn't last past his second year, fourth month, so I just deleted him from my freezer). The math involved after looking in the FAQs is mind boggling.

I'm hoping adding "the" means it's a good thing right?

MR2 is indeed my favorite title in the series. It has the most complex, compelling game mechanics, though MR4 has the most evolved ones. The musical score is also the best in the series, and the battles have the greatest sense of urgency. Not to mention the sheer number of unlockable breeds. There are 38 species in the game, and about half of them are locked away. The many strange methods of unlocking monsters contributes quite a bit to the entertainment value in this game.

It's also the game which most prominently exemplifies "Monster Engineering". Everything in the game influences a monster's growth, health, stress and overall lifespan, and these invisible values can be taken advantage of to engineer the most powerful monsters in many different ways. Even effective combination requires careful statgain comparison and stat order.

If you're really good, you can beat the game with your very first monster, living well over 7 or 8 years. But only those whom have mastered Monster Engineering can calculate your monster's entire lifetime, final stats and movesets before even shrining anything. And even max their stats out completely.

Of course, though the results are astounding, it's quite tedious and highly unrecommended for those starting out or have only played the game for a few months. It's much more fun playing it the normal way, though tossing in small elements of egineering which don't get in the way of your entertainment couldn't hurt, like alternating between mint leaves and nuts oils every week.

I would do this (I see it EVERYWHERE on FAQs and whatnot) but I just am to lazy

You also forget about the Mini-games, expeditions, unlockings (I want that Dragon dang-it) and other fun stuff packed in there as well.

I haven't really enjoyed MR4 too much, mainly because Combining doesn't do jack squat, and my 1st gen monster has a maxed out stat, but it does almost nothing. Adventure mode was just... I dunno... Tedious

I also stopped playing MR EVO (although I got it for free, thank you RPGD ) I love the MR "theme" but really that's all it feels to me. A theme.

So yeah, MR2 is plainly my favorite. Even with the emulator I can use the shrine (which is plain cool).

I believe I already mentioned the unlocking.

Speaking of which, Dragon can be unlocked by attending a B-Rank Invitational. Sometime around spring or summer after you hit Rank B, the chairman will personally give you an invitation to attend an Invitational battle to decide if IMa can raise a special FIMBA monster species. Basically, you'll be fighting a Dragon, but be careful; it's incredibly powerful for a B Rank. If you win, you get the Dragon Tusk. Use it as a secret seasoning to get a Dragon.

I've read up about that. Thanks though.

With combing monsters, I've had a hard time with this. I mean both my Crab Saurians were the same exact stats (or very very close). Yet the Crab Saurian (or Zuum) that comes out has crap for power.

I am guessing because power isn't it's best baseline stat, thus it doesn't come out when combining.

Also what the heck is this for, anyone know?
